My Approach & Professional Background

I completed a Bachelor of Social Work in 2008 and a Master of Social Work in 2009. After I graduated, I joined McKechnie Counselling Services, my mother’s company, part time while I worked full time in child welfare. For the next ten years I worked in both areas of Social Work to increase my training, skills and experience working with a wide variety of populations and challenges.

I am a straight, cis, white woman ally who strives to create safe spaces and working relationships for BIPOC and 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.

When people ask why I became a Social Worker, my answer is simple - I think I was raised to be one. As a child, I saw the changes my Moms social work skills brought to her community and clients. People often told me my Mom saved their life or their marriage. I thought she was a real life superhero.

My approach is holistic and a bit eclectic. My style draws from several therapeutic approaches, such as, Narrative Therapy, Brief Solution Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Trauma Therapy, Cognitive and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy. I am also trained in EMDR and utilize mindfulness techniques.

I was honoured to join McKechnie Counselling Services full time in 2020; the same year we saw a call to action for mental health providers. Everything changed when we realized how accessible therapy could be for people in a virtual world. Teletherapy offers people the ability to access therapy from the comfort of their own home, or a walk in their community. It provides anonymity for those who want advice without contact. It allows people to access therapy without the extra time of getting to and from an office. Most of all, it allows people to pick the therapist they think is right for them, not the therapist closest to them.

History of McKechnie Counselling Services

McKechnie Counselling Services was established in 1995 by Heather McKechnie. Heather’s passion for the field of Social Work led her to create a company that focused on individual needs and customized approaches. It led her to start a company that focused on connection and healing the heart.

Heather is a past President of the Ontario Association of Marriage and Family Therapy as well as the Canadian Registry of Marriage and Family Therapists.

Heather worked in the field of Social Work for 47 years, never losing the passion to serve others. Heather’s commitment to ongoing learning and growth within the field inspired me to become a Social Worker myself and to never stop exploring new techniques to help my clients heal and grow.

Heather retired in early 2022 and left this plane of existence on September 30, 2022. The ongoing practice of McKechnie Counselling Services is in honour and memory of this inspiring Social Worker, woman, and mother.
